5 Reasons You Should Move to Charleston

Thinking about a move to the gorgeous coast of the Lowcountry? You’re not alone. Named #1 city in the United States by Travel + Leisure Magazine—seven years in a row, no less—Charleston is adored by locals and visitors alike.

But does that make it the go-to option for your new home destination? According to the numbers, yes! A recent study done by Realtor.com shows Charleston as the #1 moving destination across the country. Starting to see a pattern yet?

While the article cites obvious reasons buyers have chosen Charleston for their new homes—such as the beaches, the food and the good ol’ Southern hospitality—we have a few more reasons that may tip the scales.

Close Proximity to Everything
Located just along the coastline of five—count them, FIVE—beautiful beaches, Charleston is a perfect location to get anywhere at any time. Looking for a little nightlife and endless restaurant options from some of the best chefs in the country? Head downtown in a matter of minutes. Feeling the need to get outdoors and tour acre upon acre of sprawling gardens? Take your pick of at least six gardens and plantations to stroll within a 25-mile radius, spanning Mount Pleasant to Summerville to West Ashley. Or how about cooling down in the mountains for the weekend? Only a few short hours away you can enjoy the great outdoors camping, hiking, and biking year round; tubing in the summer; or skiing and snowboarding in the winter.

No matter where you are in Charleston, you’re never far from anything.

Lower Taxes

There’s a reason so many northerners head south as they approach retirement. South Carolina ranks 6th for the lowest property taxes out of all the states, making signing on the dotted line for your new Charleston home an easy choice. In fact, the median property tax paid in South Carolina is a shockingly low rate of only $821. That’s a stark contrast to California’s median property tax of $3,237 annually… or New Jersey’s whopping $7,601.

Endless History and Culture
Home to the first shots fired of the Civil War, Charleston is no stranger to history. As such you’ll find no shortage of interesting historical tours, military forts, museums and memorials to visit throughout the Holy City. Adding beauty to sometimes difficult topics, the art scene has flourished, offering an impressive selection of local painters, photographers, sculptors and more to showcase their talents.

The gardens and plantations—such as Middleton Place, Magnolia and Drayton—all marry history and beauty, where you can see the ruins of plantation homes, slave quarters and the grounds that once boasted indigo, rice and cotton.

It’s not all about the past, however. Charleston’s culture steps into the 21st century with a lively music scene, from well-known bands at multiple arenas around town to theater shows at The Gaillard Center to lesser known (and loved) indie musicians prime for their big debut.

Perhaps Vanity Fair once said it best, “With its acclaimed restaurants, soul-stirring landscapes, vibrant culture, and exquisitely preserved Antebellum wonders, Charleston, South Carolina, exudes a gravitational pull for travelers as the one American South city they absolutely, positively, must visit.”

Gorgeous Year-Round Weather

We can just leave it right there, right?

Of all the reasons to move to Charleston, many claim the weather to be their #1 motivator. With mild winters (think, NO SNOW) and hot, beach-ready summer days, we’re thrilled to say that on average Charleston sees roughly 230 days of sunshine annually.

This provides the perfect environment for family-friendly days outdoors, after-dinner strolls and gardening throughout 80% of the year.
